Where to start with cosmic horror
Cosmic horror makes people small: what frightens us is not only a creature, but the possibility that our understanding of the world is inadequate. These five films offer different ways into that feeling. This is a choice of approaches, not a ranking or a demand to watch them all in one night.

Choose The Endless for a contained mystery, Alien for confinement, or The Thing for suspicion. Annihilation and Color Out of Space make transformation central. These films can be graphic; check each film’s information rather than treating “cosmic” as an intensity rating.
The Endless
Start small. The attraction here is a community and the unease surrounding it, rather than a tour of cosmic mythology. It is a useful first step if you want a mystery to follow while the larger implications gradually emerge.
Explore The Endless (2017) on HEXAnnihilation
Choose this for transformation. The environment is part of the horror, so looking closely matters as much as waiting for an attack. It makes a useful contrast with the enclosed spaces of Alien: the strange world is something people enter, not simply something they can lock outside.
Explore Annihilation (2018) on HEXAlien
Choose confinement and an unknown organism. The ship makes the danger immediate even when its origins remain distant. If cosmic horror sounds too abstract, Alien offers a direct survival story before you consider the wider questions behind it.
Explore Alien (1979) on HEXThe Thing
Choose suspicion. An isolated group faces a threat that makes identity itself unreliable. Pair it with Alien to compare two kinds of confinement: fear of what is somewhere nearby, and fear of what may be standing directly beside you.
Explore The Thing (1982) on HEXColor Out of Space
Choose a domestic world coming apart. Its place in this selection is the spread of the unfamiliar into ordinary surroundings. Follow Annihilation with it if the most compelling part for you is an environment that refuses to stay recognisable.
